The Results Are In!
On Saturday, September 17th, in Orlando, FL at the 2011 Paralyzed Veterans of America’s Spinal Cord Injury Summit and EXPO, Cody Unser will be a part of the SCUBA-Medical Pilot StudyResults Presentation.
Cody, along with the principle investigator, Dr. Adam Kaplin from Johns Hopkins, and Dr. Daniel Becker from Kennedy Krieger, will deliver the results of the SCUBA-Medical Pilot Study. The results are very exciting and something the scientific community should embrace.
The Pilot Study was conducted May 5-12, 2011 in the Grand Cayman Islands. 10 disabled veterans and 10 volunteers in a control group worked with CUFSFs Dive Team, Operation Deep Down, and the doctors to gather neurological and psychological data. CUFSF, who commissioned the study, hopes that the presentation will support the hypothesis that SCUBA is a therapeutic tool that can be used in the scientific community as an expansion of what we know as ‘exercise science’.

Chris Sullivan served as a Sergeant in the 256thInfantry Brigade, Louisiana Army National Guard. While on an EOD mission in Iraq, he was shot in the neck by a sniper, leaving him paralyzed – C-7 quad.
Al Kovach, Jr. was a member of the elite U.S. Navy SEALs, when he broke his neck in a parachuting accident while on a combat training mission. He was elected Paralyzed Veterans' National Senior Vice President.
Jeff Scanlon, US Army, was assigned to the 158th attack helicopter battalion as a light-wheeled vehicle/power generation mechanic. In a car accident Jeff suffered a cervical spinal cord injury that initially left him completely paralyzed, but eventually his recovery improved to incomplete quadriplegia |
Cameron Ballensky, a Navy veteran, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of California - San Diego. He is an adventurer who loves photography.
Robert (Bob) Molinattiserved in the United States Army and was paralyzed from the chest down after a car accident. He is a Cal-Diego PVA member and enjoys sports announcing.
John Supon has a Bachelors in Parks and Recreation Management and is working on his Masters Degree in Leisure Studies. He works with Craig hospital as a peer mentor in helping new SCI patients. John is a competitive athlete in Powerlifting, Biathlon, and Downhill skiing. |
Chris Kaag served in the USMC and is now the president and executive director of his own fitness center. He is a competitive athlete and the founder of a local charity in Pennsylvania to help people with disabilities.
Craig Cascella is a USMC veteran who served as a Military Police Officer and as a Presidential Security Guard with HMX-1 (Marine Helicopter Squadron One) under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
Michael Paul served in the Army to secure a job working in an elite unit attached to the military intelligence as a recon soldier. He served during the Gulf War, and specialized in airborne, air assault, and special ops warfare. had a skydiving accident, which resulted in a lower level (L1) spinal cord injury. | |
